Did you know that the bacteria in your gut might be part of the reason you’re fat? And why your annoyingly slim friend can eat junk food all day long and not gain weight? At least, that’s what seems to be the case according to the research quoted by Dr Michael Mosley in his latest book, The Clever Guts Diet.
The Clever Guts Diet is a quick and fascinating tour of our “microbiome” – the billions of microbial organisms that live inside our insides. It was released off the back of a BBC documentary called Michael Mosley versus The Superbugs (well worth a watch if you can), which explores the serious issue of antibiotic resistance and what we can do to stop the impending crisis.
(Spoilers: American farmers need to stop feeding antibiotics to livestock, and you need to stop taking antibiotics when you have a cold).
It might be tempting to think that learning more about the squillions of critters that live inside your gut will either
(a) be boring, or
(b) make you uncomfortable and queasy.
In fact, neither one is the case.
This book is packed full of stories, examples, and quite frankly jaw-dropping facts about the effect that our gut microbes have on our health and even our behaviour.
Dr Mosley has a self-confessed obsession with the microbial world in our digestive system, and his affection for our friendly bacterial friends fairly leaps off the page. He writes exactly as he speaks, which means the book is a warm, engaging and accessible read.
Fun fact: the word “poo” is used 25 times in The Clever Guts Diet
Dr Mosley presents the scientific facts about gut health in a way that’s easy to understand, and more often than not he includes a real life story or analogy to make it even more clear. You can see that Dr Mosley is genuinely excited and passionate about his topic, and his enthusiasm definitely rubs off on the reader.
In this book you’ll learn:
- That microbes living in our gut are an essential part of how the human body works
- How to make sure you’re creating an environment where the good microbes thrive (and the bad ones die)
- The effect of gut health on sleep, stress, cravings and weight gain
- How to protect against the disgusting-sounding ‘leaky gut syndrome’
- …And a whole stack of other weird and fascinating facts
Plus you also get pages of recipes that will help make your gut a happy place.
(Surprisingly, they all look absolutely delicious.)
Understanding how your microbiome works can help you make decisions about what you eat, and it promises to radically change the way we think about the food we put in our mouths.
Worth the price for the recipes alone, this is an engaging, easy-to-read book that I highly recommend for anyone who owns a digestive system.
